Some new work in progress and card making
Erosion_1. Suffolk coast photomontage.
Presently I’m involved in several long term photography projects. This is great, apart from the fact that this means I’m unable to make (and therefore show) new work very quickly!
So during half term a fortnight ago I had a change from the normal routines, a break from my projects (well for a few days anyway!), and made some new work. A couple of days on the Suffolk coast was refreshing- the sea is something I have really missed this year. It has been a very busy ten months with family events and finishing my MA.
Balancing work, life, and setting up as a photographer / artist is demanding, especially as I am working on different approaches: commissions, new research and art work, and (due to request) fine-art cards.
It wasn’t an easy decision to make cards from some of my images. There were many questions I needed to consider. As an artist, how do you value your work? Certainly not by the amount of time it takes to make a piece. Perhaps by reputation or how long you’ve been working in the field, exhibiting or having publications. Does making work more affordable and accessible in the form of cards devalue the original? Which ones should I choose? How should I market them (if at all)? Only time will tell if it was a good idea or not, but I enjoyed making them anyway!
One of the next things I am going to do is book binding - having made quite a few dummy photobooks over the past twelve months or so, I’ll be taking it up a notch - tools, equipment and materials are on order, fingers crossed for that!
